Reading contest to reach Principal's goal (I have kissed a pig and dressed like a princess and kissed a frog in the past) The students vote on what they would like to work for.
The front bulletin board displays the goal and the theme is carried throughout the school. Students document their time/books read and then add to the board. One year the pig's tail grew all over the walls and up the stairs.
We have a kick off assembly and goal met assembly. (The pig kissing made the newspaper)
We host a family night with reading activities for the whole family and resources to make and take home. Last year families were given a passport to make their way to each station and completed passports were put in a drawing. The winning student will be principal for a day.
Each classroom decorates their door to represent their favorite book. Students vote on the best door and the winning class gets to choose the lunch menu for the school for a week.
We also have guest "surprise" readers come to read to classes. It may be a past teacher, a family member, former student, me, board member, or community member.

will officially be starting our Reading Month activities on that day.
- All-school assembly
in the gym as a "kick-off" event to get the students excited about the
month to come and explain the activities to them.
- 8th graders dress up as different Dr. Seuss storybook characters and have them parade through the gym during the kick-off assembly, carrying a copy of the book they are from.
- 8th graders pair up with a kindergartner and read the book to them.
- Guest readers to come in throughout the month
- as well as organizing an event where the parents and/or family
members come in to listen to the children read from a selection of their
own writing. At this point in time, the children's librarian from the
local library has agreed to come in sometime during the month and read
to the students, as well as talk about the benefits of utilizing the
library. I am also working on securing additional guest readers from the
community, some more famous or well known, such as the mayor of
